Can It Cry Over You?

When actress Sophia Loren sobbed to Italian movie director Vittorio De Sica over her jewelry theft, he lectured her: “Listen to me, Sophia. I’m much older than you, and if there is one great truth I’ve learned about life, it is this—never cry over anything that can’t cry over you.”

My late Grandma Thelma often said, “Boy, the ingredients give your dish its flavor and success.” And we have learned that the ingredients are the combined Scriptures from His word.

Mr. De Sica gave his friend Sophia an ingredient for life: “Never cry over anything that can’t cry over you.” Likewise, Christ gave His followers an element for life. After He fed the 5,000 with a few fish and loaves, the next day they asked Him, “Where did you go?” They replied, “We were looking for you.”

He replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things (subject to decay or going bad quickly) like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you.”

In other words, Jesus said, “Always trust the God of the stuff, not the stuff from God.” And don’t be moved when you don’t get the stuff or overly joyous when you do, so much so that you feel a gigantic need to social media the stuff, because stuff comes and goes.

A recent trip to the landfill reminded me of the final resting place for stuff, but a well-cultivated relationship endures when things are callous.

Think about that and enjoy this day full of benefits and favor!
