4 Life Areas Leaders Must Master

Mastering areas in our lives helps keep us balanced. Think of your tires. If one of them is off balance, your whole car will shake, shimmy, and feel like it’s falling apart. The lack of balance in your vehicle can make it feel as if the car is going to fall apart.

It’s a scary experience for those who have experienced an issue with tire balance.

Know what else will also shake, shimmy, and feel like it will fall apart if it’s not balanced? Our lives! More specifically, four areas of our lives.

4 Life Areas Leaders Must Master

1. Emotions:

If you’re a golf fan, you may have heard of Bobby Jones. On the course, Jones was often described as having the temper of a timber wolf. He would get upset, throw tantrums, and his clubs!

He didn’t have control of his emotions. Until something changed in his life.

Jones met Grandpa Bart, an employee in the club pro shop. Grandpa Bart told him, “You’ll never win until you can control that temper of yours.” What Grandpa Bart was telling him was that he needed to get his emotions under control.

Jones took Grandpa Bart’s words to heart. He began to work on himself, his emotions. Soon, he won a major golf tournament at the age of twenty-one. Grandpa Bart quipped, “Bobby was fourteen when he mastered the game of golf. But he was twenty-one when he mastered himself.”

Our emotions can spin us out of control. They can make it so we can’t get things done, lead others, or lead ourselves. Let’s work on getting our emotions in check.

Get off the emotional rollercoaster.

2. Faith:

Another area of our lives that we need to master is that of our faith. Our faith tells us who we are, helps us understand what we should do, and find ways to help others.

I know religion can get a bad rap. Many people have used it to control others, make money, and harm others. That’s not the point of our religious faith. Our faith should make us better human beings. Think of Mother Teresa, Martin Luther, or other champions of the faith. They went out of their way to help others.

How do you master your faith? Three things can jumpstart your mastery:

  • Daily devotions: Find time to sit down in the Word of God to grow closer to Him. You can’t get to know God without spending time with him.
  • Prayer: Prayer will help you communicate with God. You talk to Him like you talk to a friend. He’s there to listen. Talk away and share your burdens.
  • Community: I consider the church community when it comes to faith. You grow better together. So, find a community that you can be a part of.

These three things will help you master your faith.

3. Physical health:

A healthy leader can be a vibrant leader. When your physical health is mastered, you can do more, go further, and keep on going more than if you are unhealthy.

You’ve probably seen an unhealthy leader. You can tell this by their level of physical activity, how quickly they become winded, and how often they feel tired.

Work on your physical health. You can check out this list of healthy habits from leaders I’ve interviewed in the past.

4. Mind:

Not only is our physical health important to master, but we have to be able to master our mental health. Our mind.

What does mastering your mind look like? It means you’re thinking healthy, positive thoughts. You stop blaming others and accept responsibility for your actions. You choose to look on the bright side rather than what could go wrong.

Our mind is a powerful tool. It will drive us in directions we don’t want to go if we don’t master our minds.

Take captive your thoughts. Guide them in a way that leads you to success.

Your mind is a powerful tool.
