The dictionary defines calling as a strong inner impulse toward a specific course of action, especially when accompanied by conviction of divine influence.
“The calling of God is personal, purposeful, and powerful.”
I am confident this is a definitive call to collaborate with God to accomplish His specific and important divine plan. This is about living with purpose, significance, meaning, and something to live for.
Consider this amazing Scripture verse:
2Timothy 1:9
who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began,
What a holy thing it is that God would call people like you and me to the ministry and purpose that He has for our lives! We are part of an eternal plan given and enabled by God’s grace.
Considering the solemnity of such a holy calling, let’s examine three elements that illustrate its wonder.
The Calling Of God Is Personal
The purpose of your life is personal because it is uniquely yours. God has called you to a significant life that only you can fulfill, which is a sacred honor. You are as unique as your fingerprint. There has never been, and there never will be, someone just like you.
“It’s personal because God is calling you.”
When He called Moses to be the deliverer of Israel, He called him by name, ‘Moses, Moses.’ He affirmed the apostle’s significance by saying,
‘You are Peter,’ indicating that Peter was the rock on which the church would be built.
Can you hear the unique call of God? It is you whom He beckons to live a
life of significance and purpose.
The Calling Of God Is Purposeful
It is purposeful because it is filled with vision and direction. God’s vision for someone is a deeply personal and spiritual concept that encompasses His divine plan and purpose for an individual’s life.
God’s calling in our life is an invitation to partner with God in His purpose and will.
When Jeremiah heard the voice of God calling him, it included a powerful purpose.
Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”
The purpose is the overarching reason for our existence, while calling is the specific means through which we fulfill that purpose. Living with
purpose brings meaning and fulfillment to even the smallest aspects of life. The purpose of glorifying God will infuse every part of our life with significance.
So, whatever the calling looks like for you, it is filled with the purpose and plans of God. It carries eternal weight and glory. What an honor to be called to something so much greater than we can even imagine.
The Apostle Paul confidently asserted at the end of his life, “I have finished my course.” Answering God’s call and living in the purpose of His kingdom will allow each one of us to come to that same conclusion. The great news is that we don’t have to do this in our strength.
The Calling Of God Is Powerful
The call of God is powerful because it originates from Him.
Ephesians 4:11-12
11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,
12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
It is powerful because the Holy Spirit empowers and anoints us for the task.
2Corinthians 1:21
Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God,
It is powerful because the Word of God is our tool.
2Timothy 3:16-16
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
And it is powerful because it can have a significant impact.
Romans 10:13-14
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
The personal, purposeful, and powerful calling on your life is your unique expression of God’s will and glory on earth as it is in heaven.
Listen for it, honor it, and fulfill it. It is holy ground. Just as Moses was told to take off his shoes because the place he was standing on was holy ground, so is the calling that you stand in holy. In the words of the Scripture about the preacher that is sent, I want to exclaim to you, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
This is the holy ground where you will be attuned to God’s calling, which will guide you to discover and fulfill your unique purpose and destiny.
