Ever been trapped in a spiritual stronghold? It’s likely that you have even if you didn’t know what was happening at the time.
A stronghold is simply believing a lie, on repeat.
We can find ourselves in strongholds because of trauma, false teaching, satanic influence, or discouragement. Regardless of the source, the theme is the same – I’m rejecting God’s truth about himself, about me, and about the world around me and I am embracing, instead, a false view of God, self, and the world around me that keeps me living in an unholy or unhealthy pattern.
The key to breaking free from strongholds is always going to be coming back to what is true. The psalmist wrote:
I will walk about in freedom,
for I have sought out your precepts.
~ Psalm 119:45 NIV
Strongholds are always constructed of lies and half-truths. But God’s Word is all truth. And whatever weapon, whatever lie the enemy wishes to use against you, there is always a precept – a word of truth from God that will set you free.
It’s certainly vital to run to God’s word in the moments of temptation and crisis. But it’s even more vital to develop the daily habit of soaking in God’s truth until it infiltrates and fills you, shaping and preparing you for ever battle ahead.
Wherever you find God’s truth, you will also find freedom.
