We all know a leader should be healthy. But what does a healthy leader look like? That’s a million dollar question. And a question that deserves an answer.
If you ask 10 people what a healthy leader looks like, you’ll probably get 10 answers. My opinion varies from other people I know but I believe it’s a good place to start.
What Does A Healthy Leader Look Like?
I believe a healthy leader looks to take care of their mental, physical, spiritual health. When a leader takes care of these 3 areas of their life, their life becomes better.
But why do these 3 health areas for a leader impact their lives so much? It’s because your mental, physical, spiritual health directly impacts the way you lead.
If you’re physically unhealthy, you won’t be able to keep up with the day-to-day grind of leadership. You’ll burn out. You’ll become tired. And you won’t have the energy to do the work.
If you’re mentally unhealthy, you will have a much harder time dealing with the ups and downs of leadership. You will become frazzled and frustrated far too easily. You may even find yourself having a mental breakdown.
Lastly, if you’re unhealthy spiritually, you’ll have a harder time relating and caring properly for your team. Your spiritual health sets the tone for how you treat others.
Creating balance and health in your spiritual, mental, and physical areas of life will help make leading so much easier.
What Does It Take To Be A Healthy Leader?
You know you must focus on the 3 areas of your life mentioned above. But how do you take care of these areas?
To become a healthy leader, you need to spend focused, dedicated time to each of these areas.
For your physical health, you may:
Go for a 45-minute hike in the woods
Take a swim in a nearby lake or an indoor pool
Run at a regular time every day or two
For your mental health, you may:
Listen to soothing and calming music
Find a way to spend an hour alone each week
Seek out a counselor you visit once a month
For your spiritual health, you may:
Attend and serve regularly in your local church
Spend time reading the Bible
Listening to podcasts or sermons from various pastors
A healthy leader is one who takes care of their mental, physical, spiritual health with regular, scheduled exercise and activity. Begin thinking of ways you can focus on these 3 areas of health. Then start to add these activities to your schedule.
