A Sign of a True Leader

The Russo-Ukrainian War started in 2014. However, in 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and escalated the conflict.

The war has drug on for over 3 years with the underdog continuing to fight. Their tenacity has shocked Russia and the world. No one thought this small country could defend itself against a threat like Russia. Russia’s military might should have overwhelmed Ukraine. It has not.

The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has continued to be a strong presence for his country. Recently, on Sunday, February 23rd, Zelensky held a press conference marking the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During the press conference, Zelensky was asked if he was ready to quit if it ensured peace for Ukraine.

Zelensky’s response was a sign of a true leader. Zelensky said:

If it guarantees peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to resign, I am ready. I can exchange it for NATO.

A Sign Of A True Leader

While Zelensky has done a lot right as the leader of Ukraine, his most recent actions show what a true leader does. He was asked whether or not he would step down if it meant Ukraine could see peace come soon.

Zelensky answered he would step down if his giving up his leadership position meant there would be peace for his people.

Wow.

A leader who would put aside his desires, wants, and needs. That’s a leader right there.

If you were asked to step aside for the greater good, would you? Would you be willing to accept losing your title, recognition, and more?

Most leaders wouldn’t. They would want to stay in power for as long as they could. They would want to see things through.

Yet, true leaders know there is more to leadership than their title. They’re willing to do what is right rather than what they want.

True leaders won’t stay longer than they need to. True leaders won’t stay if their presence continues to hurt their organization.

What You Can Do

Pay attention to the health of your organization. Is it improving? Is it decreasing? You must pay attention to these metrics.

If you notice that the health of your organization is decreasing, look for the reason why. If you are the reason the organization is struggling, don’t be afraid or ashamed to step aside.

You can be the key to unlocking more for your organization. Sometimes, that means you’re no longer there on the front lines. It means you have to take a step back and away.

It takes a brave leader to recognize this. It takes a true leader to be willing to step aside.

If your organization needs to you step aside, be willing to do so. You’ll not only help them, you’ll help yourself.
