I want to stir you to refocus on the priorities God has given to you. It is never time to get complacent in our walk with God. We are living in the last days filled with many snares and distractions from the enemy. We must stay alert, sober and proactive in our walk with God. We must stay engaged in the Word and prayer, eager for the task in front of us.
Amos 6:2 declares, “Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!” The NIV declares, “Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria…”. In this portion of Scripture, God warns those who are caught up in luxurious living, but care nothing for their fellow man who is broken and hurting.
Not only did they not take interest in the hurting, but they became prideful and filled with a false sense of security in natural things. They were lounging in luxury, sleeping in ivory beds, eating the tenderest meats of lamb and chosen calves. They drank well, perfumed themselves with sweet ointments, but cared nothing at all that their brothers and sisters needed their help. Could it be that they experienced prosperity and lost sight of what it is intended for? Prosperity is certainly a biblical principle, but not to make us prideful and indifferent to fulfilling the great commission. If prosperity has made the Church complacent then we have too many things!
Romans 12:11 declares, “Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.” The Barlcay translation declares, “You must keep your enthusiasm at boiling point. You must always be serving the Lord.” The Richert translation declares, “You will never want to let your drive slacken in your service for our divine leader, for he provides ample motivation.” The Laubach translation declares, “And do not let your love for Christ’s work grow cold. Be on fire with the Spirit, as you serve the Lord.” We are strongly exhorted by God’s Word to avoid complacency and no be distracted from the Lord’s work, which is reaching hurting humanity.
Jimmy Carter once said, “I hate to see complacency prevail in our lives when it’s so contrary to the teaching of Christ.”Charlie Bell, Former CEO of McDonald’s, once said, “The biggest threat to McDonald’s lies within- and that is as a company becomes complacent. There’s a lot of companies that get fat, dumb and happy and take their eye off the ball and forget about customer service.” Has the Church become fat, dumb and happy? Have we taken our eye off the ball– the harvest? Spiritual apathy is like a virus that has invaded the Church. We must detect it and guard our hearts from contamination which ultimately will destroy our progress and future.
Let’s keep our focus on what is important to God! Let’s place a high premium on the lives of those lost without Christ. Let’s press into the Word and prayer and catch His heart and follow His plans. We must challenge ourselves daily to keep our hearts on the right track and in the right place. Psalms 19:14 declares, “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” Let’s not get all caught up in natural things. Let’s keep our focus on eternity and what really matters!
