How to Increase Your Spiritual Strength

The Bible says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). He cannot devour just anyone. But if you are spiritually weak, he will destroy you, which is why it is important to be strong and on the alert. One of the ways you can increase your spiritual strength is by speaking in tongues.

The Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 14, “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit IN THE SPIRIT he speaketh mysteries.” (verse 2). Speaking in tongues is your supernatural prayer language for you to communicate directly to God. And the devil does NOT have a clue what you are talking about because you are speaking spiritual mysteries.

As you speak in tongues, YOUR spirit becomes stronger, and you receive supernatural power to subdue your flesh. “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh” (verse 16). When you speak in tongues, you are instantly in the Spirit. So, one of the ways to subdue your flesh is to pray in tongues. Are you struggling with temptation? Do you want your spirit to be stronger? Start praying in tongues. You got to be intentional about it. Set time aside every day and begin to pray in your supernatural prayer language. Praying in tongues is your hotline to heaven, and every prayer you pray in tongues is answered because the Holy Spirit is praying through you.

As you continue to pray in your supernatural prayer language, your spirit continues to become stronger. That is one of the primary purposes for the baptism in the Holy Spirit with the gift of speaking in other tongues – personal spiritual edification. “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself…” (1 Corinthians 14:4). Other purposes for speaking in tongues include public ministry, such as speaking in tongues and then interpreting to edify a body of believers, and then supernaturally speaking another nation’s language as a sign to the unbeliever of that nationality. But the most important purpose for speaking in tongues is personal spiritual edification and supernatural communication with God.

“He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself…” (1 Corinthians 14:4). The word edify in this verse can be compared to charging a battery. The longer you stay plugged in to the source, the more charged you become. And you will know when you got the victory in prayer because you will go from intense intercession in tongues to rejoicing and glorifying God. That is how you will know you got a breakthrough. When there is victory, the burden lifts and the atmosphere shifts.

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost” (Jude 1:20). Praying in tongues will not build your faith, but it will build you up in your faith. You become more sensitive to the Holy Spirit when you pray in tongues. Your discernment becomes sharper. Your flesh is subdued, and you begin to flow more in the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Your attitude changes; you are much nicer, more positive, and more loving. “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 1:20-21).

The Apostle Paul said in Ephesians 6, “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (verses 10-11). The seventh piece of the armor of God is praying in tongues. “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints” (verse 18). Pray in the Spirit. That is how you will overcome the devil and his temptations. That is how your spirit will become strong. That is how you will live a victorious life in Christ.
